Peterhead
Shopmobility
PRESS RELEASE - from Aberdeenshire Council
& Aberdeenshire Towns Partnership
Residents and visitors to Peterhead with restricted personal mobility from
Monday 4th September 2000 will have Peterhead Shopmobility to assist them gain
access to the Town Centre and its facilities.
Aberdeenshire Towns Partnership through the Peterhead 2001 Project is
supporting physical, social and economic regeneration of the town. Partners,
Aberdeenshire Council, Scottish Enterprise Grampian and Scottish Homes with
additional funding from The European Regional Development Fund, North and West
Grampian Objective 5b Programme are moving Peterhead forward with an ambitious
investment programme.
Peterhead Shopmobility is a small but essential part of the major Town Centre
Regeneration Project comprising the upgraded and extended pedestrian area,
revised traffic management scheme and associated community art. Only essential
vehicles will have access to this area and some members of the public faced
disadvantage. Peterhead Shopmobility aims to address this by offering a range of
mobility equipment to assist accessing shops and services in the town centre.
Peterhead Shopmobility is located in the Maiden Street Car Park. Motorised
scooters, an electric and manual wheelchairs can be pre-booked and issued on
short loan periods during the two mornings and one afternoon each week that the
unit is open. Volunteer staff will assist and provide instruction on how to use
the equipment safely and give friendly support and advice to users.
The scheme will be registered with the National Federation of Shopmobility
and with their advice and the dedicated support of users, Peterhead &
District Disability Forum and other volunteer groups which we would invite to
join us, we hope to develop this facility and enhance the service it offers.
Aberdeenshire Council's Housing and Social Work Service will also provide
support to the scheme in its early development.
The Aberdeenshire's Towns Action Programme and the European Regional
Development Fund have funded in equal amounts the total capital cost of £10,000
to provide the unit and equipment. Retaining the scheme beyond its first year
will ultimately require sponsorship and fund raising and the support of the
local business community will be important. The availability of the scheme and
an easily accessed town centre should be seen as an opportunity to develop a
particular customer base and shop owners should consider what more they can do
to service all customers both the able and not so able, the young and old.
The Aberdeenshire Towns Partnership is grateful to Peterhead & District
Disability Forum for their willingness and enthusiasm in initially staffing the
facility and to the following companies:
Wheelchair Care of Forres for advice, technical support and as
suppliers of mobility equipment;
Turriff Timber Products, manufacturers of the office unit;
The Buchan Observer for reporting and advertising the scheme.
The Opening Hours are: Mon & Wed 10.00 - 12.30 and Thu 1.30 - 4.00

Lead volunteers
Anyone over 18 can
become a Lead volunteer. Our volunteers come from all walks of life. You don't
need a formal qualification, just an interest or skill that you would be willing
to pass on to a disabled adult. Most important are your communication skills and
your focus on a student's abilities, not their disabilities. We ask for a
regular time commitment from you.
If you are interested in volunteering, can you:
 |
offer practical help to a
physically disabled Lead student? e.g. scribing, buddying into a classroom) |
 |
pass on a particular skill? (such as basic
computing, literacy, numeracy) |
 |
support an artistic interest?
(such as music, painting, arts and crafts). |
Prior to being matched with a student, all our
volunteers go through a selection process, and are trained. There may be a delay
before we are able to match you, depending on local student demand. Volunteers
can claim travel expenses.
If you are interested in becoming
a student or a volunteer, or would like more about us, please get in touch at
the above address.
