The Act places a duty on the Co-operative as a
Registered Social Landlord to encourage equal opportunities in all areas of its
operation. In particular it must comply with the requirements of previous
equalities legislation.
The Co-operative recognises that equality means
that all parts of our diverse communities need quality, affordable housing. It
will work towards meeting this need through the development and implementation
of its equal opportunities strategy
The Co-operative will develop an equal
opportunities action plan as part of its overall strategy to meet this duty.
This plan will cover all areas of the Co-operative’s services including,
Allocations, Housing Management, Rent Arrears, Harassment, Maintenance and
Development, Tenant Participation, Communications and Staffing.
The first step in this plan is to look at the
current position. Information will be gathered on the needs and experiences of
people from groups or communities who may experience discrimination. The
Co-operative plans to use the network of contacts built up in the tenant
participation strategy to help this process, along with other methods.
Following on from this, objectives, and
activities to help achieve them, will be set. This will be an ongoing process
involving checks on progress made and a regular review of the plan.
