Homelessness
The Act places new statutory
duties on the Co-operative and other housing providers to provide accommodation
to homeless people.
Among other things the
provisions on homelessness and allocations include:
 |
A
duty on the Co-operative and other housing providers to comply with a
request from a local authority for accommodation for a homeless person |
 |
A
right for anyone over the age of 16 to register on the Co-operative’s (or
any other landlords) housing list |
There is a new emphasis on the
role of local authorities in bringing different agencies (including the
Co-operative) together, particularly voluntary sector organisations to plan
services for homeless people in the longer term.
The Act represents a
strengthening of the rights of homeless people. It includes the right to
temporary accommodation whether or not someone is in priority need and a new
statutory duty on the Co-operative and other housing providers to provide
accommodation for homeless people upon the request of a local authority.
