As
some of you may have seen, the former Glen o' Dee TB sanatorium at Banchory recently
featured on the BBC’s ‘Restoration’ programme. This unique Edwardian
Bavarian-style timber sanatorium was constructed at a time when TB was the
biggest killer in the
UK.
It
was opened on Christmas Eve 1900 and soon gained a reputation for original
and successful new treatments. It
closed in 1928 before being reopened in 1934 as a luxurious hotel.
In 1941 the Hotel was requisitioned by the army and used for
training then at the end of the war, it was purchased by the Scottish Red
Cross Society who refitted it once again as a sanatorium, this time for ex
servicemen and women suffering from TB.
It
was subsequently transferred to the NHS in 1955.
This beautiful and historic ‘A’ listed building is now under
threat. Tenants First are seeking to purchase this to provide sheltered
and very sheltered housing to enable older people to live independently in
the community.
